Mission + Prince's Island Park Engagement: Nicole + Scott

Mission-Engagement-Session-0688.jpg

After being introduced by Nicole's sister and Scott's brother (who married one another! How great is that??), Nicole + Scott ended up at the same poker night. And while they connected that evening, it wasn't until a bit later that their spark grew into a flame.

Last Christmas, they decided to exchange one gift every day for the 25 gifts of Christmas. Little did Nicole know that the very first gift contained a beautiful engagement ring from Scott.

Nicole + Scott will be saying their "I Do's" next August at the River Cafe in Calgary, and I can hardly wait. These two were such a blast to hang out with, and made my job behind the camera incredibly easy. We met in Mission to begin our session, and then continued down to Prince's Island Park for golden hour. It was pretty impossible to take a bad photo of these two. They're easy going, down to earth, and can always make the other smile.

Thank you Nicole + Scott for coming down to Calgary for your engagement session. I am so excited to share in your big day!

Tips for choosing your wedding photographer

Tips for choosing your wedding photographer

With wedding session just a few months away, I thought I would share with you all something that I send to all the brides that contact me asking for more information about me and my photographic services.

Selecting someone to capture one of the most important days of your life is a daunting task. With the number of photographers (or those claiming to be photographers) out there, it's tough to know how to choose the best one for your wedding. Therefore, I've compiled a list of tips to help you sort through all those picture-taking-professionals.

In my personal opinion, the most important factor in considering who to select to photograph your wedding is someone you both trust and enjoy spending time with. Your photographer is going to be there throughout the entire journey of your wedding, from the the planning stages to the cake cutting; you're going to want someone who cares about their clients as much as they care about their work.

Begin your search as soon as possible

Finding the perfect wedding photographer takes some time, so start researching as soon as you can. Many photographers book their weddings a year or two in advance, so by starting early, you’ll have a better chance of booking the photographer you want.

Check out the goods

This may seem a bit obvious, but it’s one of the first things you should do. In addition to checking out the photographer’s portfolio, look for complete wedding coverages (usually can be found in their blog if they have one). While their portfolio should wow you, reviewing a full wedding will give you a better sense of their ability to tell the story of your big day.

Style Matters

If you’re not sure what style of photography you’re drawn to, take a look through a couple different photographer’s portfolios. The first question you need to ask yourself: which photographs stick out to you? Is it the posed portrait in the field where every detail is set to perfection? Or is it the photograph of the groom whispering into his bride’s ear during their first dance? Secondly, can you see yourself in those types of photos? Knowing what style of photos you want will help when narrowing down the photographers you want to meet with. When you do meet, ask them about their style. They should be able to clearly define what their style is - if they can’t, then there’s a chance your photographs will all look different and won’t flow together as a story.

Meet with your short list

After you’ve narrowed down your search and contacted them to ensure they’re available for your date, meet with them! Your wedding photographer is one of the most important aspects your wedding. From getting ready in the morning to your last dance in the evening, your photographer will be right by your side, documenting and preserving the memories of your wedding for years to come. It’s important that you like, trust, and get along with this person.

Know what you're getting for your money

Make sure you clearly understand what you’re getting for your buck. Does your photographer have an assistant? Do they have travel fees or require accommodation? Does your USB of images include printing rights?

What's their history like?

Asking your photographer for past client references is a great way to find out the type of service you’ll be receiving. Ask your bride if you can get the contact information of previous brides that have hired that photographer.

As mentioned above, in my opinion the most important thing to remember is that this person is going to spend more time with you and your spouse on your wedding day than any other person. So make sure you get along with them, they make you feel comfortable, and that you trust them to photograph your special day.

North Glenmore Park Family Session: Jen, Brendan and Liam

DeannaCupido-4028.jpg

I love reconnecting with old friends, and while Jen isn't THAT old of a friend, it had still been an entire year since I last saw her. During which, her and Brendan had a BABY! Little Liam was full of smiles which made for a lovely afternoon in North Glenmore park. Jen was convinced that they would be awkward as they come, but it was an absolute breeze taking a good photo of these three (four, if you include Jen's mom who came along for the ride. I love the last photo of the two of them - they would NOT stop giggling! They just love to crack each other up). It was so great catching up with you guys! Congratulations on your little one - I hope I get to see a lot more of the three of you!

Wine, Sun and the Sea - Family Vacation

DeannaCupido-1963.jpg

After finishing my last day of classes, I dropped everything and headed to the island with my family for some much needed R&R. We rented a little house in Sooke, which was RIGHT on the water (see below for our AMAZING view!), and spent our days soaking up the sun and drinking the recommended daily intake of wine. Afterwards, we spent a night in Victoria before heading back to Vancouver.

Stay tuned for my next post where I blog about the second (yes, SECOND) vacation I got to take with a very special boy.

This was our view from our rental house on the ocean. Like I said, amazing.

These are my siblings! Even though I'm pretty sure you wouldn't be able to tell from looking at us.

And these are my parents! They're pretty adorable.

Alyssa and Stuart. I guess they're adorable too. Must run in the family.

The men in our family do not tend to follow the rules. You can't see my Dad in this picture, but don't kid yourself - he's back there.

Our last stop on the island before getting on the ferry was a visit to Buchart Gardens. I'm not one to take a lot of pictures of flowers...

... so I usually make my siblings and their loved ones pose for me.

Who WOULDN'T take a family photo (minus Alyssa and Stuart) in a glass ball in the middle of a public park?

Our last family photo (minus Susanne, our gracious photographer, and Eric, who had to work this vacation). Thanks Jeff for letting me borrow your gangster hat to protect my stupidly-allergic-to-the-sun face.

That's it everybody! There, that wasn't so bad, was it? At least I didn't sit you down in front of my slide projector.

Welcome to Deanna Rachel Photography & Design!

Screen-Shot-2014-08-19-at-12.29.58-PM.png

Hello everyone! Thanks for taking the time to visit my site to check out the new and improved Deanna Rachel Photography & Design!

After a year of studying photography at the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts, I am so excited to put what I've learned over the past 12 months into practice and launch my business. I strive to be more than someone clients just hire to do a job on their wedding - through meaningful connections and lasting relationships, I hope to become someone that can partake in the joy and excitement of planning their wedding, and help preserve the memories of their special day for years to come.

I am thrilled to not only offer wedding photography packages, but portraits (family, engagement, children)  and recently, boudoir photography!

Not only that, but with my graphic design experience, I can provide a variety of design services for the your special day, including invitations, programs, menus, thank you cards, and albums.

I would love to meet with you over coffee and get to know you better. Deanna Rachel Cupido

New website/facebook page/logo!

Screen-shot-2013-03-11-at-4.36.53-PM.png

I am pleased to announce the creation of my website, www.deannarachel.com, my facebook page, and my new logo! With Vancouver on the horizon, I thought it would be a good idea to get started on a website so I can share the work that I'm doing in school and keep in touch with everyone back home! I also saw this as an opportunity to really get serious about my photography business and set this up to showcase my work for any potential clients looking to get some photoshoots in over the summer before I head out to the coast (hint hint!).

So take a spin around the site and let me know what you think! If you like what you see (how could you not... there's some quality work here) and want to get some more information about booking a session, send me an email at info@deannarachel.com and we'll chat!
