East Village Engagement Session: Mackenzie + Steven

East Village Engagement Session: Mackenzie + Steven

The best sessions are the ones that involve tea beforehand to catch up, bike rides around the neighbourhood, and a couple that is incredibly sweet, down to earth, and oh-so-trendy.

I don't think I could be more in love with these two and the photos we got from their Inglewood and East Village engagement session. I absolutely cannot wait to photograph their wedding next month!

Lantern Church Wedding: Courtney & Dan

Lantern Church Wedding: Courtney & Dan

People told me that I was crazy for agreeing to photograph a wedding only two weeks before my own. But after meeting Courtney & Dan and hearing their story, there was absolutely no way I was going to pass up an opportunity to photograph their love.

After meeting at a conference and then again through church, Courtney & Dan became fast friends. They bonded over their passion for social services, and found themselves constantly in in the presence of one another in the form of movie nights, getting together with friends, and weekly dance lessons (how could you NOT fall in love with someone who voluntarily signs up to learn how to dance on a weekly basis??). Slowly but surely, their friendship grew to become something more, and there was no turning back.

Courtney had been suspicious for weeks that a ring was just around the corner, but when Dan announced one day that they were going to spend the day in the mountains, she immediately knew this would be the day. They spent the day at the spa treating themselves to massages, and ate a late lunch at the Rimrock Hotel. Afterwards however, it seemed as though they were headed back to Calgary; Courtney's heart sank, thinking she had guessed wrong. Yet, as they took a turn, Courtney noticed the sign for "helicopter rides" and squealed. She had joked on many occasions with Dan how she longed for a helicopter ride, so it was then that she knew.

So together, they flew over the beautiful rocky mountains, smiling ear to ear, eventually landing on top of a mountain with the most stunning look out point. They sat on a blanket, drank hot chocolate, and it was then that Dan proclaimed his love for Courtney. He asked her to spend the rest of her life with him, and of course, she said yes. And if that wasn't enough, they arrived home to a surprise party that Dan had organized so they could celebrate with family and friends. All in all, I'd say that was a pretty perfect day.

Which lead to a pretty perfect wedding. The sun shone brilliantly for their May 7th wedding at the Lantern Church in Inglewood. There wasn't a dry eye in that church when Courtney walked down the aisle with her dad. They were surrounded by friends and family as they read their own personal vows, were blessed by their fathers, and sealed the deal with a kiss.

Courtney and Dan, thank you for welcoming me into your life to document your beautiful day. From the moment I met you both in that coffee shop in Kensington, it was clear how much you cared for and loved one another. My wish is that your marriage is full of many adventures, helicopter rides, and dances in the street.

How We're Planning Our Wedding

How We're Planning Our Wedding

4.jpg

As mentioned, this series is going to share how Eric and I are going about planning our wedding: what’s important to us, what we’re trying to keep in mind, and what we want our wedding to feel like. I’m not pretending to be a wedding planner here (although being a wedding planner did make my “what I want to be when I grow up” list) - I’m simply trying to add my voice to the conversation.

I’m going to delve into some of the specifics when it comes to our wedding, but I wanted to kick off this series by outlining the overall goal that Eric and I set the moment we sat down to start planning:

Let’s make our wedding fun and let’s make it about us.

That’s it. That was our only goal. If we walked away from our wedding with sore feet from too much dancing and sore faces from too much smiling, we’d know our wedding was exactly what we wanted it to be. Everything else in between didn’t matter as much as the fact that Eric and I wanted to look back on our day knowing that we had the best time celebrating our commitment to spend the rest of our lives together.

Now, coming from two Grade-A people pleasers, this was not and is not an easy feat. I can sit here all day and say that I threw the opinions of my parents and friends and complete strangers (yes, I've gone to strangers for their opinions) to the wind, but I think we all know by now that's exactly true (I've had 3 people read this post before I published it). But with each new task, the urge to text anyone with a heartbeat and an opinion subsides and I am able to make that decision with Eric. This has made all the difference when it comes to how I felt about wedding planning.

Because let me tell you, it is EXHAUSTING trying to figure out what will make everyone happy. And regardless of how many people you’re inviting to your day, there is absolutely no way that everyone is going to like every single one of your decisions. So in the end, the only thing you can do is try and make you and your fiancé happy. I’m fully aware that this is the most cliche thing I could have started this blog with, but it’s a lot harder to follow through on this than you might think. And really, at the end of the day, you are planning an entire party that centres around you and your future spouse. So if there was ANY time that selfishness was acceptable, this would be it.

Back to the point: by keeping the theme of fun in our minds, it ended up helping shape a lot of the decisions that we had to make. If it wasn’t fun, then we weren’t going to do it. If it didn’t make our day more enjoyable, then it wasn’t going to happen. So yes, there might be some “unique” qualities about our wedding, and we might’ve cut some of the “traditional” aspects that we didn’t want to do. And while I know this won’t sit well with everyone, I’m sticking up for the choices we’ve made because … well… *clears throat* it’s our wedding.

I don’t want to give any more away, so I’ll leave you with that. In my next post, I’m going to talk about what Eric and I looked for when searching for a venue (plus a “fun” story on how losing our originally booked venue ended up being more than okay).

Thanks for reading! To those reading who are married or planning their wedding - what was/is important to you and your spouse when you planned your wedding? I would love to hear from you - leave a comment below!

Fall Wedding at the Lakehouse : Mandy & Brittney

Fall Wedding at the Lakehouse : Mandy & Brittney

"I will never forget the evening Mandy informed me of her intentions to propose to Brittney. We had planned a night out, at our very special place –Una. Mandy was looking particularly radiant this evening, almost like a cat who had caught a mouse. As we were waiting to be seated Mandy couldn’t contain her excitement- and she told me “I’m going to propose to Britt.” This is when my eyes immediately swelled with tears. I had always assumed that Britt would proposing to Mandy, so I had to inquire, what had inspired you to propose?

Mandy said to me with glowing confidence, “I have never been so sure of something in my entire life. I want to be married to Britt forever, and I want to give her that special moment of surprise, I don’t want to wait”

When I first met Mandy & Britt, I was instantly blown away by their love for one another. We met for coffee one evening last October, and fell in love with their kind, warm personalities. As they recalled their story for me, it came to light that Brittney was the one who did most of the pursing at the beginning of their relationship. They met at a bar, "where all good things happen" and while Brittney was immediately enamoured with Mandy, Mandy was yet to be on the same page. And so the pursuit began. It took an evening of ginger bread house making, a "House Bunny" movie night, and a kiss at midnight for Mandy to slowly but surely fall in love with Brittney.

As noted above in Megan's speech (Yes, she gave me permission to use her speech. We're friends. It's cool) after 7 years of adventuring through life with Brittney, Mandy could no longer wait to be her wife. So on Christmas 2013, a Chinese gift exchange took place between them and their closest friends. After everyone had excitedly opened their presents, Britt was confused as she sat without a gift. Suddenly, she received the best gift of all: there Mandy was, kneeling, ring in hand, asking Britt to spend the rest of her life with her.

Their wedding could not have been more perfect. Love was certainly in the air on that crisp September day. Their wedding took place at The Lake House, where the wine flowed and hearts were full. Everyone could see how much these two loved one another.

Mandy and Brittney, words cannot describe how honoured I am to have been chosen to document one of the most exciting and important days of your life. Thank you for your kindness, your hospitality, and for making me feel like I was a friend instead of a vendor. I have loved getting to know each of you and I cannot wait to see where life takes you.

All my love,

Deanna

North Glenmore Park Wedding: Katie & Geoff

KatieGeoff-NorthGlenmorePark-54.jpg

It was the most perfect of days. Despite the snow that had fallen the previous day, the sun shone beautifully on August 22, 2015 for Katie & Geoff's North Glenmore Park wedding. Their day was filled with love as they were surrounded by their closest friends and family. I've already raved about Katie & Geoff in their engagement session, but I'm obviously going to do it again. They are two of the most welcoming, kind-hearted people I have ever met. They are all about community and the people they surround themselves with. At the beginning of the ceremony, they did something I had never seen before but absolutely LOVED: they had their guests turn to someone they didn't know and introduce themselves. It was heartwarming to see two families come together and share in the excitement for Katie & Geoff. The ceremony that followed reflected Katie and Geoff's personality to a tee. Whether it was the vows they had written themselves, the poems that were read, and their first kiss as husband and wife, going through the images from their day still makes me smile.

Another part of the day that I loved was that, following their ceremony, Katie and Geoff took their bridal party out for beers at the Wildrose Brewery after their pictures were done. It was fun to see everyone just relax and take time out of the day to simply celebrate together (the back of the Brewery also made for some pretty great photos as well).

Katie and Geoff took every opportunity to involve their friends and family in their wedding: the ceremony was performed by a close friend; Katie's STUNNING bouquet and florals were made by friends and family; their invitations were designed by Katie's sister; Katie's mother played a huge role in bringing Katie's "DIY Anthropologie" vision to life for their reception at Festival Hall (I'm pretty sure I overheard that she hand-painted every wine glass with gold rims... What!!); they had friends play music and read poems; and my all-time favourite part was when Geoff's mom brought out Geoff's school assignments from when he was younger and shared some of the wisdom of Geoff's younger self.

All in all, I'd say it was a pretty perfect day.

Katie and Geoff... thank you. Thank you for allowing me into your lives to document  you and your love. I was absolutely honoured to be part of your day, and I hope these images will remind you of how perfect your wedding was. I wish you both nothing but love, happiness, and an exciting journey together as husband and wife.

Crestmont Community Hall Wedding - Amy & Jon

Crestmont Community Hall Wedding - Amy & Jon

He always said he would never get married... Until he met Amy. They met through mutual friends in church, but their real connection happened one night in Cochrane. Amy and her friend invited Jon and his buddies out for drinks in Cochrane, even though Jon was at his company's Christmas party in Calgary. And so despite "closing the christmas party down" Jon made the drive out to Cochrane late at night, eager to see this girl he had known for so long. It was that moment that he knew that maybe he liked Amy a lot more than he thought. Despite the spark that occurred that night, they took the next year to develop their friendship while also developing themselves as individuals. About a year and a half later, Jon made it official by asking Amy out to dinner, and from that moment they never looked back. Their friends and family sighed in relief, the word "finally" coming to mind.

As I sat during their pre-wedding meeting and listened to them talk about one another, I knew that these two were in it for the long haul. I had them recount their love story, and as they did, they hardly even looked at me as they reminisced about their first date, their first kiss, and what they loved about each other. As I mentioned, Jon never thought he would get married. He grew up thinking that he was going to change the world, and didn't want anybody to take him away from that. But after meeting Amy, he realized he wanted none of it if she wasn't by his side.

And so, on the first day of August, surrounded by friends and family, Amy & Jon read aloud their vows and committed to spending the rest of their lives together. A brunch reception followed, which included the most delicious build-your-own waffle bar. We then took off with the bridal party just down the road from Crestmont Hall and took bridal party photos. Afterwards, we went to finish our session in a secluded area down in Valley Ridge.  Despite the hot weather and bright sun, these two were absolute troopers.

It was a day filled with love, joy and happy tears (most of them coming from behind my camera). Amy & Jon, your day was absolutely perfect. It has been my absolute pleasure getting to know you two and your story. I cannot wait to see where you two head on your journey together as husband and wife. Thank you for giving me the honour of documenting your love.
